2021 HANDMADE BUYER RESEARCH
In 2021, Trade+Impact, in partnership with Aid to Artisans and global marketing consultant Dondrill Glover, surveyed our network of global buyers of handmade and artisan products.
This study is meant to bolster the relationships between handmade buyers and sellers and to gain a deeper understanding of the factors that may be restricting growth in the sector.
Although this report is focused on buyer research done in 2021, it references the CMH Artisan Survey we conducted together with Powered by People (PBP) in 2020, funded by Mastercard Foundation, to include a broader perspective and highlight additional gaps and opportunities that may exist in the sector.
Creative Manufacturing and Handmade: A Sector Whose Time Has Come
Trade+Impact partnered with Powered by People to conduct research funded by Mastercard Foundation in the creative manufacturing and handmade sector. Out of 191 enterprises on four continents employing nearly 35,000 people, we found the majority have significant potential to grow. Yet most lack tools and services required to compete in a global retail marketplace. They face three principal barriers: insufficient financing and market access as well as lack of technology for business automation and scale.¹
They also have clear advantages, including in-demand skills and pervasive mobile adoption. As a result, the sector is ripe for solutions that use data collection and analysis to support improved enterprise management. This will in turn enhance market access, while attracting financing and investment.
This report seeks to clarify the sector’s challenges and opportunities, while igniting interest among partners and stakeholders. Only a combined effort by impact investors and venture capitalists; donors, philanthropists and non-profits; major retailers and wholesalers; bankers, logistics firms and artisan enterprises themselves will move this massive, dynamic, but often neglected sector forward.
ARTISAN AND NATURAL PRODUCTS ASSESSMENT IN ZAMBIA
T+I was contracted by Prospero in Zambia to conduct a national assessment on the artisan and natural products sector in the country.
This in depth analysis was conducted through survey and in-depth interviews and complimented by a media depository and artisan profiles which can be found here.
This project was funded by UK AID and implemented in partnership with FREE Zambia and Lusaka Collective.
